Default I have a DSD that has been licking herself

quite a bit. Today I took a look at her
and below her tail there is a brownish
substance around her anal gland. Is there anything I can do or should I
take her to the vet

sounds like she needs her anal glands expressed...be sure to hold your
breath!

It could be anal glands, but in that case, I'd think the smell would
have clued you in.

Assuming it's not impacted anal glands, it could be a UTI.
Sometimes there aren't many signs that the dog is suffering from
one, so I think a trip to the vet is in order.

Barring either of those two possibilities, it may be that she's just
habitually licking herself. When that happens in a specific area,
the saliva will turn the fur reddish brown. You really should
discourage obsessive licking, though, because it can cause a lick
granuloma.

Sounds like the anal glands if you've never expressed these yourself please
take her to the vets have it done and have them show you the proper way to
do it. This needs taken care of it could lead to an infection if left go.
