Unhappy New Owner: Doggy problems

I'm currently the new owner of a 2 year old (human years) Golden Retriever. This is my first doggy.

Yesterday, my mum informed me that she found a cut on one of Missy's (my dog) hind legs. We spent more time with her and hoped that the cut will heal soon. But, this morning, my mum said that Missy seems sick.

I am very worried. The thought of taking her to the vet ran through my mind, but did not mention that to mum yet.

Is there another way of treating the cut besides taking her to the vet?

If she's acting sick there may be an infection. She needs to see the
vet ASAP.
