Default Some potentially "Responsible" dog food vendors

It *may* take 40 days, 40 nites just to -begin- to get a handle
on the issue of contaminants in pet food. It's possible they'll
never sort all of it out ...

Nutro is talking about co-manufacturers, Hills has recalled a dry cat product.
So, I'll go out tomorrow and maybe pick up a bag of Innovo Blue (or
somesuch), and take my Crazy Birddawg off my Nutro/Sci.-Diet mix
(at least until they make material sense of the hideous mess).

Following is a seat-of-the-pants list of vendors who are evidently
without any connection with Menu Foods or sub-contracting production
(i.e. overseas sourcing). I've never had any connection with any
of 'em.

Aunt Jeni's (Home Made 4 Life): No products made by Menu Foods. They
make all their own products.

Blue Buffalo: Not made by Menu Foods. Canned foods made by American
Nutrition in Utah. Dry foods made at CJ Foods in Kansas.

Evangers: No foods made by Menu Foods. They have their own cannery.

Halo, Purely For Pets (Spot's Stew) Not made at Menu Foods. Foods are
made at a USDA kitchen where human foods are made. Nothing less than
USDA grade foods can even be brought into the kitchen.

Healthy Pet Products: Not made by Menu Foods. All foods made in-house.

Homestyle Select: No foods made by Menu Foods. All foods made in their
own plant.

Merrick: No products made by Menu Foods. All Merrick foods, dry, canned
and treats are made by their own facility.

Natura (Healthwise, California Naturals, Innova): Has their own plant
for dry foods. Canned food is made at the South Dakota Menu Foods plant,
which is not one of the plants involved in the recall. They also say
they provide all the ingredients themselves.

Natural Balance: Not made by Menu Foods. Dry food is made at their own
plant then shipped to the Diamond plant where it is bagged. They have
thier own people on site all of the time. Canned food is made at their
own plant, then shipped to American Nutrition in Utah where it is
canned. Natural Balance has their own line at American Nutrion and no
other canned foods are run through NB's equipment.

Pet Promise: Not made by Menu Foods. Canned foods are made at their own plant in
Wisconsin.
Dry Foods are made at their own plant in Denver.

Plus they support family farming, as well as environmentally sustainable

Their food seems very high in protein, even the adult dog food. Is more
necessarily better?

I wouldn't say 25% is "very" high. It's lower than
performance feeds and right about where Eagle Pack Holistic
Select maintenance diets are. It's substantially lower than
Innova Evo (42%), which is not marketed as a performance
food. In fact, the macronutrient balance in the Pet Promise
maintenance diet is right about what I look for for my
non-working dogs and for my sleddogs during the off season.
