Default HOW TO? : Transport Dogs / Pups from South to NE

Greetings all,

The animal shelter where I volunteer (501c3, volume of roughly 3,000
animals per year) would like to find out about transporting dogs and
puppies from overwhelmed Southern shelters to our own facility, where
we often have room to spare.

This is brand new to us, so we're seeking out leads and contacts to
discover what is involved, the logistics, and how to get such a
program going.

Any help from you nice folks would be *greatly* appreciated. Feel free
to email me directly with any info you have.

Cheers,
John

==========
After Katrina, the Rottweiler rescue where I got my dog from had volunteers
who took a van packed with dog crates and went down South themselves and
rescued unclaimed Rottweilers and Rottweiler mixes and other dogs left in
the overburdened shelters. They made that trip two or three times with some
help from donations.
When my daughter adopted two pugs from two different Pug rescues down South,
the rescues found her a transporter to bring the dogs up to MA. My daughter
paid a fee for the transport. They came by car and were delivered at two
different times and I believe she paid $100 for each dog to be transported
to a nearby area for pickup on two different trips. The transporters had
delivered different dogs to different people in different states all along
the way. Both dogs were in good shape when they arrived, so I have to
assume they were well taken care of on the trip. I believe the driver told
me she would stop every couple of hours and walk each dog and give it water.
I would think your best bet would be to do what the Rottweiler Rescue group
did and get volunteers and a van or two and go down yourself and get the
dogs. If you have a website, you could request donations for such a
purpose.
Maybe you could contact For the Love of a Dog rescue and ask how they
managed to do it on their own.
If you go to this page on their website and look over the past issues of
their newsletter you will see
September, 2005, November, 2005 issues talk about how they handled it.

Check out the Yahoo! groups (groups.yahoo.com). A search for 'pet
transport' turned up a whole bunch of relevant groups, including
Rescue_Contacts, gulfcoast_rescue_n_transport, I-95_Rescue_and_Transport,
etc. The one I monitor most frequently is Pettravel.
