Puppy Beating Gets National Attention

By: James Clark

The Humane Society of the United States is now on record as being
involved in the beating death of a Dachshund puppy.

Accusations that a Lubbock man tortured a puppy to death now have
national attention. The Humane Society of the United States tells News
Radio 1420 that they have left a message for Lubbock District Attorney
Matt Powell. Kathy Thompson is a program specialist with the Humane
Society’s Fort Worth office. We asked Thompson what she hopes to
communicate to Powell when he returns the phone call.

She says, “We want to encourage him to take it seriously. We want to
question him first on whether he is going to prosecute. And if so, we’d
like to make him aware that there’s a strong connection between animal
cruelty and the perpetration of cruelty on humans. In these kinds of
cases it looks like it could be a family violence type situation. And
often the pet suffers in these kinds of situations far too often.”

The local chapter of the Humane Society has also called for an
investigation. Police were called out to the Savannah Apartments early
Tuesday morning. A neighbor said a 22-year-old man threw his
girlfriend’s Dachshund puppy against the apartment wall until it was
dead. The neighbor said the puppy sounded like it was screaming in pain.
A police report says 22-year-old Tyson Chance Mullins was arrested a few
blocks away on charges of public intoxication and evading arrest.

The police report does not confirm the neighbor’s claim of animal
cruelty. However, if animal cruelty charges are filed, it would be a
Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail.
