thigh muscle pain

My mini schnauzer has
exercised with me all of her 6
yrs of life and is very
muscular. Recently, after a
long walk/jog she was very
sore in her thigh muscles and
I suspected lactic acid
reaction. I rested her for a
week, massaged the muscles
every few hours, then started
slow, short (1 mi) walks. She
is eager, trots out in front
but the muscle soreness and
some cramping returns.

Three questions:
How long should I rest her
before she can return to
joining me on walks/jogs?
What might I do to assure a
comfortable re-entry program
for her?
What could I do for her
current sore muscles? epson
salts, massage, ice, or what?

1) How do you know it's in the thighs? 2) if she's still
sore a few days later it's not "lactic acid," but possibly
an overuse injury or something else 3) if she's cramping I'd
consider a chemical/dietary/hydration problem. To the vet,
to the vet, to the vet, vet, vet.
