Show win brag!

Beau showed REALLY well this weekend at the UKC Michigan Classic-- he
moved and stacked like he'd been doing it most of his life (instead of
like a dog who's never been on a leash before... like he normally
does). There were a TON of really good dogs there both days in all
four shows, so I wasn't really surprised that Mr. Obvious Fault didn't
place in the Group ring on Saturday. On Sunday I thought he was moving
even better and stacking with some sort of happy expression... but I
thought for SURE we'd go home with nothing when the judge gave a
really nice GSD Group 4 the Sheltie who'd been getting Group 1s all
weekend the Group 3... but he looked very closely at Beau... and Beau
got GROUP 2!!! This is the best he's ever done. I called his breeder
and her big comment: "Wow! Imagine what he'd do if he had a tail!"

I'm really geeked right now. Next time he needs a blue ribbon. Blue
matches his coat a lot better than green or red.

What a fun weekend! :-) Bodhi's breeder judged Belgians yesterday
at this same show, I think.
There aren't a lot of UKC shows out this way, but I think there's
one in May. I plan to try & go.

Congrats!! My Pug and I just got our first Group 1 last fall, and the
feeling is 10x better than any other placement! I hope you get to
experience it soon.

TERRIFIC!!!!!!!! The best I've ever done is to get pulled for a second
look in Terrier Group... ANY Group placement is a big deal!

(Of course, it would help if I was a better handler....)

Thanks! This is the same judge that gave Beau Res. Champion at the
Premier, over three tailed dogs (he said he got a lot of flack for his
placements, via email... but he stands by Beau being better than those
dogs). He was also happy that he's consistant with his placements.

BTW, Andrea, the same judge judged sighthounds, too, and gave a neat
little tri girl Basenji (I think her name is JJ) Group 1. She's a
nice little dog. Her owner was really cool, too. I made mention of
your dogs and she said she'd met Brenna at a National Specialty a few
years back.

I just don't get that. Why are people such butt heads? Take your losses and
move on, jerks. Good for the judge though. I love hearing that some of them
actually have backbones and honest to goodness opinions.

This doesn't make much sense to me...a novice! what was he suppose to do, but several dogs with obviously greater
faults ahead of a dog with lesser faults (IIR, Beau is a natural bob correct?)

I'm interested to know, do you find a fair amount of biased or discriminating opinions that go against Beau because
of his "fault" despite the fact that from what you've said, he's an great example of the breed? I would think, all
things being equal, the dog with the least faults wins and so on, so if a dog with a tail still had more problems,
it would seem to me that Beau should be placed above them....

Hmmmm Contrats anyway.

Yep, Beau's a natural bob. To /me/ it's simply a cosmetic fault since
it hasn't hampered his working ability, at least not that I've seen.
Many judges have said that if no tail was so bad Pems, Aussies, Stumpy
Tailed Cattle Dogs, Entles, Bouviers, Old English Sheepdogs, and many
other herding (or working/guardian) breeds would have tails, so they
don't buy the "the dog can't work" excuse.

FWIW, in ACA the bobtail is not faulted at all. I just haven't had
the time to drive to TX or MS to show my guy. A bobtail did take
Reserve Male at an ACA show a few years back before his owner retired
from showing, and a female is close to making Champion (or at least
that's the last I heard). In one of my Catahoula books a bob had a
2nd place NALC ribbon, but that was long before the bob was revised to
a fault, then "serious fault".

I have had a couple of judges look at Beau and put a tailed dog over
him just because Beau's a bob. One dog Beau's beaten every other time
they were in the same ring. (to be honest, it's hard to hide
something like NO TAIL, while some faults can be hidden by how the dog
is stacked or moved). You take your lumps and learn from them,
though. I will say that Beau is getting a LOT more respect now that
he has "CH" in front of his name. The judge that gave him the Group 3
at last year's Classic (to finish his CH) said she did it because he
moves so well--something that is way more important in a herding breed
than pretty colors or tails. (I like to talk to the judges after
judging to find out what they think is good AND bad about my dog-- my
all time favorite response: "There's nothing I don't like about this
dog-- he's got a big strong jaw to grip a hog with. THIS is what I
want between me and a hog!" This judge had been to many hog bays down
south. G).

Other than their color and tails, the two really do look alike.
Strike's owner thinks Beau might be a little taller, but I'm not sure
since I don't know what Strike measures at. (I'm really wanting a
Strike puppy next year or the year after).


At the Premier the judge (same as this Sunday's judge) said three of
the five dogs in the ring didn't have deep enough chests to
breathe--something he felt was important in a working breed (also, the
standard states the chest must reach at least to the elbow, and at
least two of the dogs DID have shallow chests). The dog that took the
Champions class (and then Breed and a Group 3) had a deep chest, too,
and was a longtail.

From what the judge told me this weekend, people emailed him and gave
many reasons why a working breed doesn't need a deep chest and if he
would like to learn how to judge the breed they'd hold a judging
seminar for him, though he declined to respond to them... he's placed
this breed as BIS before and no one complained until a bob beat their
dogs... funny how that works.
