OMG!
What are you feeding him, Diane?!
Miracle Gro?
Hard to believe this picture of health and happiness
started out life as he did.

Way to go!

:-) That boy had pretty much the same attitude at 5 weeks old and
everything Diane's done with him has encouraged it.

Terri, weren't you the one who knew McNabs growing up around Mt.
Shasta? Diane told me that the old-time herding folk feel Tsuki is
McNab, from his herding style as well as his looks.

Your memory is astounding. That conversation took place years ago!

Yes, guilty as charged; that was I. I'd forgotten all about it
until you mentioned it.

Diane told me that the old-time herding folk feel Tsuki is
McNab, from his herding style as well as his looks.

I think I can see it in his coarser/shorter coat and build, with the
exception of his ears. It's been so long since I saw one, I looked it up and
found this:

http://www.flyballdogs.com/personal/mcnab.html

It shows a B&W photo, difficult to see well, but except
for the ears, Tsuki DOES look a lot like a McNab.
In this site, there are two stories on the origin of the breed,
but Ukiah is not very far from Shasta County, where I first
heard of the breed name.

This is fascinating now that I spend more time looking
at Tsuki's photos.

Yanno what? Except for the ears, the dogs on that page look like McNabs.
;-) According to what I've read- and this is corroborated by Chime, my
agility instructor's McNab- the typical McNab ear folds over in the middle.
IOW the dogs on that page are atypical.
(In fact, if you read the text on that page, it says: "...ears are medium
sized and somewhat pointed; usually the upper half of the ear flops over.")

I would be surprised if McNabs were not extremely variable in phenotype.

By the way, if anyone's interested, there's a probable McNab in rescue
available in Maryland at the moment.

Do you have his photo?

Where in MD? I don't think anybody in my club is looking for a dog right
now, but it wouldn't hurt to let them know about it.

No it never does. In fact my agility mailing list for my club is constantly
posting
irresistable dogs. And I know quite a few of them do get placed this way.

Ah, good. NOT in a shelter, then!

Although, it seems to me that someone interested in a McNab for agility
would be just as well served by a Border Collie,

Erm.... depends on what they're looking for. G Admittedly my personal
experience is limited to Chime, but her personality is VERY different from a
BC's.

so if anyone's looking
for a dog they should check out the rest of the dogs on the site too.

No shortage of BCs for adoption, definitely.

BTW, speaking of BCs not being kept by their owners: guess who showed up,
and ran her mother's BCs, at the NADAC trial this weekend?

There is a wide variation in personalities within Border Collies (Solo and
Fly, for example, are poles apart), and I would be surprised if the same
were not true of McNabs since they are closely related breeds used for
similarly varied purposes.

True, but let me rephrase what I wrote: Chime's personality is not like
that of ANY BC I know- and I know a heck of a lot of them. She is far more
like a terrier or an ACD in attitude than any of the several hundred BCs
I've met.

I am not sure the two breeds are not
basically interchangeable for the purposes of agility.

For the purpose of being good at agility, maybe not. But somebody who can
live easily with a BC might not, for example, be able to live with a Jack
Russell.. and I know that Debi finds Chime harder to live with than any of
her BCs.

Again, I freely admit that I only have a sample of one- but that one is
significantly different from any BC I've met, and an experienced BC handler
and owner finds the same thing.

I don't know.

Paulena. Turns out I've known her mother for years- just never knew they
were related.

I've seen McNabs on livestock and I would put their drive and toughness more in
line with the ACD also.
