Help with poop eating puppy
"Rusty Myers" wrote in message
. .. I've seen comments here about switching foods that has helped. Also other people have mentioned that they outgrow this bad habit. I'm looking for some suggestions. Right now I just yell "no" and she lays down in a submissive mode, but doesn't drop it. I end up taking it away, oh joy. Obviously she is reacting to the no, but it hasn't made the avoidance connection. Does your dog know the Leave It command? If not, you should practice instilling the command and use it *before* she gets it in her mouth. Then you can swoop in and remove it. Of course, this only works if you're right there with her every time she poops. Also try Diane Blackman's collection of links on coprophagia (poop-eating): http://www.dog-play.com/poop.html We went through something similar with our dog, but he stopped cold turkey when we changed his food from Purina One to Nutro lamb & rice. It may have been pure coincidence, though. It may have just been a phase; he's no longer on Nutro and still doesn't partake. Cate |
