Default Devastated (pet loss) - and need help

My best friend has (had) 2 Dachshunds (they are like my little angels
as well). One of them (2 yrs old) was urinating in his "kennel/crate"
that he sleeps in/rests in last Thursday, Friday and Saturday, which
was unheard of - but no other visible issues. On Sunday night, he had
very loose bowels. Early Monday morning (yesterday), he was vomiting
w/diarreah. Rushed him to the vet. Vet said no gastro-intestinal
obstructions, just "a lot of gas pockets." Also he had an elevated
fever. Injected fluids in him, gave him meds for the rest of the
problems. This morning, he was hemorraghing severely... and around
noontime -- was put to sleep.

Vet thinks that maybe he "was poisoned." This is unbelievable because
(1) he is watched over like a hawk by "the mom" and the rest of us (2)
everything is sealed up tightly around the house (gates are up during
the day) (3) he goes outside only for walks on a leash and to run
around in a fenced area.

The other Dachshund, appears to be fine... however, he is under really
close watch for any other symptoms.

What happened??? I'm devastated that he was a playful little boy on
Saturday, and now gone today??? While we cannot bring back this one
little angel, everyone wants to ensure this does not happen to the
other one. What can we do?

Thanks in advance.
