Default anal glands

I have been debating this for quite a while. My dog needs to be
expressed 1-4 times a month. He has plenty of fiber, but it's not
doing the job. He would chew on his rear until that smelly stuff gets
all over him.I have read in this newsgroup about people who
had injections to stop the glands from producing that nasty stuff.

How safe is it? What are the risks or rather how big are the risks?
Do I need to go to a specialist or will the regular vet have
enough experience? What happens if the injection misses the sac and
goes elsewhere? I love my dog and don't want anything bad to happen
to him. Any advise would be appreciated.

.........It would be more helpful to hear from you how often you've seen
things go wrong, since you work at a vet's.

Murphy had this done as she was having to have her anal sacs expressed every
week or two.

The vet said surgery was one option, but he preferred to initially try
injecting a caustic solution into the sacs (under general anasthetic) which
destroys the lining of the sacs and stops them producing the nasty mucus.

It has worked absolutely brilliantly, she has never had any buildup in the
glands since, and it's been probably over 6 years now. No other problems
with incontinence (I think that is only a risk for sac removal).

Rachel,

Can you tell me the name of the solution injected? I want to do some research
before seeing the doctor. I see articles on removals but nothing on
injections.

Thanx -JM

Good idea. I have no idea. I can try and remember to ask the vet tonight
when we get Murphy's arthritis injection, but it will be a couple of days
before I can reply to the group.

cheers
