Default Stand!!??

I'm teaching Roz to "stand" from a sit but she isn't cottoning on very
well.
I get her to sit in front of me and ask her to stand and use a gesture
(raising my left hand from waist height to my chest in a sweeping motion).
She stays sitting as she doesn't know what I want, she is all attention and
willing but just doesn't understand. I have used my right hand under her
rear legs to get her to stand, while signalling and saying stand ( no force
, she stands as soon as my hand is under her) but the touch seems to be too
distracting and she loses focus for a second, even though I praise the
"stand" it's lost on her.

I have tried holding a tug toy as a lure but she stays sitting as she
doesn't know what I want so she chooses not to break the sit with a word she
doesn't yet know.

I've tried doing it from the side in a similar fashion but with the same
results, I don't use food to train and in any case food wouldn't be the
solution here as her willingness and attention are fine, it's her
understanding thats the problem.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks,

Paul.
