Default standard poodle??

I have been taking all of the online questionaires that are supposed
to help determine which breed of dog is best for you. Are these
things accurate at all?? Because nearly all of them have told me that
a Standard Poodle is the dog that would fit best into my household!

Now, I've always thought that poodles were floofy lounge dogs...?

I'm looking for a dog that will (a.) not attack/bother my cats and
parrots (b.) go running with me, backpacking into the wilderness and
camping with me and my husband (c.) likes to play fetch (d.) doesn't
shed very much. Do these sound like a poodle to you guys?

I'll do more research, but I'm looking for firsthand information from
active folks with standard poodles.

tia,

I think they're helpful for bringing breeds you might not
have thought of to your attention. They're less useful if
you have specialized interests. They always recommend gun
dogs for me, but I'm interested in mushing sports.

Anyway, a standard poodle is a great active dog. I've got a
friend who pounds out big miles every week and her standard
runs with her and does wonderfully well. She's also a very
smart, trainable dog, which seems to be typical of the
breed.

Actually they're extremely smart, and the Standards are very active and
have a huge sense of humor.

Actually, yeah. A Standard anyway. Remember they're a good sized dog.
Others that come to mind would be a portuguese water dog or a
curly-coated retriever. Labs shed like crazy even though they have
pretty short coats.

Yep, sounds like a poodle.

They're not floofy lounge dogs at all--they are active dogs, similar to
Labrador in temperament with a lot more brains in there. Very intelligent,
hardy dogs, if you get a well-bred one. They shed only slightly, though you
do have to keep up with the coat. They can be trimmed in various
clips--many which are very reasonable and not "floofy" at all.

Oh and another point. Standards, under the smart exterior that loves a
good joke, can be very serious dogs indeed. Don't underestimate them,
they can be tough and protective. I've always loved black Standards.

there is a Schutzhund trained poodle in my area. not sure if he's titled,
but it's pretty cool that he's trying.

Standard and miniature poodles fit your list of desires. I raise miniature
poodles, but have handled standards for 20 something years. Most mini and
standard poodles are NOT "lounge dogs". They are active dogs who need
exercise. I do agility with my minis, and they can keep up with the shelties
just fine thank you!
