Default Beagle using crate as restroom

We have a beagle (Woody) who is about 2 years old and often goes to the
bathroom (#s 1 and 2!) in his crate. He has done this off and on since he
was a puppy. In the training he went to, the leader said, "Dogs never go in
their crates, as it is disgusting to them, and they won't go to the bathroom
where they live." Well, Woody wasn't listening. We take him outside first
thing in the morning and the longest he usually stays in the crate is 6 or 7
hours. It doesn't seem to made a difference how long he is in there,
though.

Any ideas or web references for this problem?

Thanks!

Bryan

Yeah, this doesn't seem to apply to beagles. What works (usually) for me is:

(1) to keep to a feeding schedule so you can guessitmate when the dog
will need to relieve himself. I find that if mine has dinner at 6 pm,
she'll either go that evening or latest, in the am before work. Snacks
mess up the schedule, but cookie in the am doesn't usually cause a
problem. And:

(2) make sure he goes, completely, when you take him out so that there's
nothing left in him to soil the crate. Sometimes my dog will go out and
do everything else but go to the bathroom. Then I bring her in and she's
like, Oh yeah, I forgot, I need to GO! Here's a good spot!

We also have a Beagle called Woody! Only ours is a bitch (I know,
strange name for a girl, but it's not our fault).

Anyway, she'd rather die than poo in her crate. Although it does have
to be said that she never actually gets shut into it, she has a run
into the garden and poo's out there.

6 - 7 hours seems like a long haul if your Beagle needs to go. Can't
you give him a run or at least an indoor room with a separate litter
box or something?

That seems like great advice. Do you just feed your dog once a day? We
feed Woody in the morning and the evening. Making sure he goes is tough
because he has a pretty good size dog run area and we don't always watch him
while he's there...

Thanks for the reply,
