Default whiny noise

My bf and I picked up a new doggie at my house in the country day before
yesterday. Fortunately our other dog really likes him. He's very submissive
(which is why she likes him, I guess)-- he will roll over on his back at a
moment's notice. But he's very sweet and affectionate. We have NO idea what
kind of background he comes from, but clearly he has been living on the road
for some time. We took him in to have shots and have him neutered today.
Unfortunately he has heartworms. :-( But we are going to treat him for
them.

He makes this whistling, whiny noise with his mouth closed. I've had dogs
that made that noise, but not as much as Buddy does. I can't tell if he's in
pain, or wants pets and rubs or what. It has a very needy, imploring tone to
it, but maybe I'm reading too much into it. Is he in discomfort from the
neutering today? Does anyone else have a dog that makes this noise a lot?
How do you interpret it? We've only had him two days, so don't have any
history to go on.

Thanks--

Sasha
