Default Odd behavior from dog

Is there anyone with some insight as to why our bullmastiff/mix dog has to
bump into people with his hip. He will walk around you and you'll get the
unsuspecting hip check. He does it to everyone he meets. He usually does
it once facing each way and then is satisfied and go about his business.
It's definitely a noticeable deliberate bump. I have moved from him when
he
thought he was going to connect, he looks back as if to recalculate and
then
does it again and won't quit until he connects. It doesn't seem
aggressive,
he's very even tempered, not a barker, biter and is wagging when he does
it.
Nobody seems to know what it means or why he does it.
FWIW He used to sit on anything's head (other animals or people) when he
was a pup. We didn't correct him to stop he just seemed and now he does
this. And he's neutered.
Just curious

my guess would be that he's testing his place in the pack. higher ranking
dogs are allowed to move lower ranking dogs out of their way, and they tend
to do it with body checks. my boy Manu used to do this, when we first got
him. i just bumped him back each time, and now he never tries it. dunno if
i really did anything to help, but he stopped. he still bumps my other dog
out of his way when he wants to be where she is. and she sighs, gets up,
and moves. then she sighs dramatically again when she lays back down.
poor thing.

Wonder of wonders, I actually agree with you-know-who on this one.

The way you describe this whole hip-bump sequence, it's a game. Your
dog has a silly sense of humor! A friend's bull mastiff does this now
and then... and I swear that his eyes are twinkling with glee!

If he was really trying to dominate a person, he'd be causing them to
move in the direction of his choice....

that makes sense. i guess i was assuming a bump from a bullmastiff would
make most people move over a bit... :-)
