Default Canine Hip Dysplaisa

Hi
Does anyone know about Canine Hip Dysplasia?
Is surgery ONLY way to cure this disease? Anyone has any experience in it?
I have a 6month old 30lbs Rottweiler, and he is slow to getting up. I am
worried that he may required surgery and I don't have enough money as I have
just lost my job.

I found out that my Keeshond had Hip Dysplasia when he was 8 months old.
The surgeon I took him to said that because he gets around so well that
management
was probably the best option for now. If he started having problems later
we
would look at surgery. My Kees has been taking rimadyl for 7 years now and
he runs and plays (really loves swimming). He still is slow to get up from
a sitting
position. Just make sure to have his liver checked every year since
rimadyl can
cause liver problems. Oh, and I also have him on a glucosamine (sp?)
vitamin.

That's TPO and not TPLO. The TPLO is for fixing ruptured anterior cruciate
ligaments.

Surgery is your best option especially at this age *IF* it is CHD.
Has your dog been x-rayed to determine this for sure yet? If
not that is your first step. You need to be sure to go to
specialist as well that is very experienced in doing hip x-rays.
There is a positioning factor. If it is CHD the tplo surgery
that is done before age 12 months has been extremely
successful for most dogs. It is by far more successful
than the surgery that is performed after 12 months of age
and less recovery time as well.

Good luck to you.

Trust me, I volunteer with a rescue and know all too well that a
majority of the breeders are NOT the responsible kind. Now, you said
that you got Buford from someone you thought was a responsible breeder -
just wondering how you chose this particular breeder, who turned out to
be anything but responsible. Do you know if this person is still in
business, and still considered an ethical breeder?

P.S. This probably belongs on rpd.breeds
