Default 8 year bassett won't eat, very weak... needs help

My dog has never had any health issues and was just 2 months ago
walking twice a day about 1.5 miles. He was a very healthy dog. Now he
just won't eat and I've tried cooking special steak, broth, wet food,
everything.. I think now that he is even too weak to eat even if he
wanted to. Each night I have to hand-feed him, as he is even too weak
to stand for very long.

The vet doctor tested him for various diseases and gave the dog
antibiotics for a while, but nothing helps. Doctor says he's
stumped.... 800 dollars later and he's stumped..He wants me to see a
specialist now, but I am wondering if it will do any good...

It all started when my basset developed a rashy, scabby sores on his
skin which I thought were allergies. He was still eating fine, just
always scratching and looked uncomfortable. So I took him to the vet
and the doc gave him allergy medicine, the same kind you give to
people. It was some over the counter drug. This helped his skin
(sores now all gone) but made him sleepy as allergy medicine can do. I
took him off this medicine but then he began not to eat and has been
starving himself for weeks now. He's lost 20% of his weight, maybe
more.. Not sure if it has anything to do with the medicine or if that
is just a coincidence.

I went back to the doc and he ran his tests, gave him fluids with an
I.V. and sent us home. The poor dog really looks bad and I am out of
ideas... He seems to like wet cat food, but he won't eat enough to get
healthy again. What could it be??

It depends on what you mean by "do any good." Will you get
a definitive answer as to what's going on? Very possibly.
Does that what you'll find is curable? I'm sorry to have
to say that the answer to that is... maybe, maybe not.

Your vet is quite right to refer you to a specialist at
this point (actually, maybe that could've happened sooner).
It's your decision whether or not to see the specialist--
if you do, the sooner or better. But in any case, you need
to keep your primary vet involved. If nothing else, at least
he can help you keep your dog comfortable for as long as
possible.

My sympathies,

Dianne

Have they checked on his teeth? My dog suffered simliar problems, cost
me a fortune in tests and it turned out to be an infection in it's
mouth. You'd be suprised at the ailments that can be caused from bad
teeth.

Thanks for the tip. I checked his teeth and they look like they could
use a brushing, but they are ok.

Update:
He is eating now!
One day he just decided that he was hungry again. I consider it
something of a small miracle since he was certainly close to
death..skin and bones.

Now he is gaining wait slowly but surely, although he is not strong
enough to walk yet.
Some people I've spoken to think that he may have had a form of
distemper, not sure though.

Only problem now is that he is starting to feel better, has
energy..but since he can't walk or move around much he's terribly
frustrated and whines and whines...

Oh well, I am glad he's able to complain (although my neighbors
aren't)
We are all keeping our fingers crossed that he fully recovers from his
mystery disease.
Thanks everyone for the help.
