an unexpected danger
There's the most unusual story in the local section of our newspaper
today. Four dogs in four months have gotten electrical shocks from electrified manhole covers. One was killed. Salt for melting snow and ice seeps into the manholes. Damaged pipes and cables expose electrical wires. The cement becomes ionized by sal****er. Electric current is conducted through the cement ot metal manhole covers. People walking over the manholes are invariably wearing shoes with either leather or rubber soles which don't conduct electricity, but dogs can get shocks, some serious enough to singe paws or kill. The electric company is under fire from the mayor to fix the situation fast. In the mean time, I'm imagining that rubber or leather boots for dogs wouldn't be a bad precaution. We live in such deep suburbs that I'm not personally worried for Cubbe, but the thought of any dog getting shocked like that is disturbing. I like to think of electricity as my friend. --Lia |
