What should we do when we are attacked by dogs? Re- A way toCo...
Joseph... most of the regulars here just killfile the guy you ranted at.
That way, we don't have to read his stuff. In working with school kids, a therapy dog group I'm in teaches them to avoid being bitten by simply "be like a tree". Stand still, arms against the body, and bent, with fists under the chin, and never make eye contact . This is to be used at the approach of any loose dog.... Rarely will the dog attack someone who ceases to be a threat... I know of one child who was knocked down by an already charging dog.. . and he had the presence of mind to simply roll onto his front and stay still. An adult frightened the dog away. He had some scuffs from the fall... nothing worse. And if on the ground, as if playing there, they can "be like a rock"... on the knees, and rolling forward in a tight ball, arms close to sides and hands with fingers interlaced over the back of the neck. Neither growling nor barking tell the whole story. The dog's body language tells Much more. A tail high and fairly straight, moving in a tick-tock-tick-tock stiff movement... ears flattened back, lips raised, hackles up... that's a dog about to do something. Rather than a growl, I worry about a snarl.... There may be no barking. Barking can be a greeting or a warning... While walking, one method of defusing a situation is simply to walk toward a dog in an arc, rather than in a straight line. Do not look directly at the dog. If standing, simply present one side to the approaching dog, and don't look at the dog directly. You have just told the dog that you are not there to challenge it.... effective use of canine language.... So, when you stood still, you did the right thing. When you swung your bag, you could've gotten really nailed.... Jo Wolf Martinez, Georgia |
