Default Dogs nails curious

Here's one that has my vet stumped- our bullmastiff/mix has black nails.
Occassionally they grow out with white stripes (from the roots). Other BM
owners have noticed this also, but I don't know if it's breed specific or if
it's related to diet/nutrition, stress what? This came up because one owner
said it's a counted as a flaw? Do any other dog (any breed) owners notice
this
Just curious
