fear/aggression only when on leash
HI
We adopted a dog (spayed female Brittany) at age 2.5 and have had her for almost 4 months. She hadn't socialized much with other dogs before we got her - previous owners said that other dogs on leash would act friendly then try to attack/dominate her. In the dog park, off leash, she is friendly and plays well with others. On the leash if she sees another dog she starts barking and growling (a higher-pitched, anxious bark). It's pretty noisy and startling in the lobby of our building! When allowed to meet the other dog, over time she desensitizes and doesn't act in the same manner (we have a neighbor with another female, and we can now walk on-leash together and the dogs are fine, they can even sniff over the same bit of whatever on the ground). She is getting better at most other things (learning sit, stay, come, front, etc) so I hope this is just something she will get over with time. Are there any suggestions as to specific concrete things I should be doing when this is going on? I know not to punish her (or praise her) for the behavior, but should I be completely ignoring it? Getting her to sit/down/??? Thanks much, |
