Default Miles to go

Have I told you about Millie, my favorite volunteer? She and her
husband have 4 dogs in a condo that allows two, so he takes two out the
front while she takes two out the back, and they meet to walk their
animals. People who meet them on the walks pressure them to date since,
'you're made for each other'. Millie teaches high school full-time and
spends virtually every other minute at the shelter, walking dogs and
cleaning. Like me, she refuses to do intake or adoption.

A few days ago, someone brought in a dog that intake refused -- rather
rare. "We can't take a dog in that condition," they said. "You'll have
to take it to Animal Control." Millie came in on the end the exchange
and just stood sobbing. The next day, she went to Animal Control,
adopted the dog and smuggled him into the shelter. She had named him
Scraps, but intake renamed him Miles:

He's been to the vet, is under treatment, and now Millie and I have a
project -- to bring out the beautiful dog hiding inside and making him
irresistible to an adopter.
He's pefectly behaved so it's only the exterior.
Millie is my hero.
