Default Too young for training?

Hi all,

I am about to get a dog.
I know some training such as housebreaking starts right away, but is
there any reason to delay other training. I'd like to start training
some basic commands as soon as possible. I've heard you should wait
till the dog is 6 months old.
Is this outdated, just wrong, or is there something to waiting until
the dog is older? Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.

I would also be interested in recommendations on training
types/methods.
If any specific type of training has worked for you etc.
