chewing/seperation anxiety problem
Hey,
Just looking for a little advice - this doesn't seem to match up exactly with any of the other posts. We have a 2 1/2 year old lab, Nelson, whom we got from a breeder at ten weeks. He is generally well behaved except that he likes to chew things when we leave the house. He has lots of toys but even with a frozen peanut butter kong he will find shoes, clothes, remote controls, plants, cushions etc. and rip them to shreds. He was crate trained and we always left him crated because we were in an apartment. At 12 months we moved to another city and apartment and tried to wean him off the crate but he kept chewing stuff so we kept crating him. Now we are in our own house. We've removed the crate completely over the course of several weeks and he's fine if he's shut in the mudroom. He has free run of the house all the time we're home, including at night, and he never chews anything. He gets lots of exercise - 30 minute + 2 10 minute walks every day plus long distance runs, cross-country skiing, hiking etc a couple of times a week. Any suggestions? We could just leave him in the mudroom which is big enough not to jeopardise his health and/or sanity but we'ld feel better if he had more space. Thanks in advance, David and Kirsten |
