Default Training Pigs

Hi guys - had to drop by to tell you what happened today!

Two days ago, I got a phone call from a woman who wanted to know if I could
train a pot-bellied pig. I admitted that I didn't know if I could or not, but
encouraged her to bring the pig in so I could try using a clicker.

Did you know that you can train a pig to sit the same way as a dog??? Hold the
lure over the head and, yup, the butt comes down. And did she ever pick up
quickly what the clicker was all about!

Before she came in, I was informed that I'm not allowed to train livestock (ugh
- corporations and their rules). So all I could do was show the woman and her
daughter how to use the clicker and food lures and send them on their way. But
I did encourage them to keep in touch, and offered any help they need in trying
to figure out how to teach her things. Great learning opportunity.

Everything's going pretty well here. Only problem is the CFS is acting up a
bit again. Not really bad, but enough where I'm really slipping badly keeping
up with chores and errands at home, and I live on coffee at work. The girls
and McTavish are doing great.

I'm going to try to come by more often - I miss you guys. (Why, I don't know.
:}

I have seen pigs being trained at PetsMart. Well, technically I guess
they were just fat dogs.

We've had a few pigs in basic obedience classes where I teach. There
are harnesses commercially available, adjustable, and varied sizes, so
they work on leash.

They are very smart! And after the first class hour, the dogs ignore
them.... Most of the owners only want sit, down, stay, come and walk on
a loose lead, so few have actually completed a standard class, but they
have done Very well in the part they do attend. Our classes are
outdoors on an easily cleaned deck, but the pigs that have attended have
been potty trained already and most live indoors at home...

Cool! I'm an avowed dog person, can't imagine hugging a pig, but the
idea of training them is too cool to be passed up. I would love to see
a pig doing an agility course. Babe taught us that they already herd
sheep. Now to see them retrieving ducks and doing guard work.
