Default Puppy training

I need some help. I have a 6 month old Rat Terrier. He is very bright,
full of energy and very eager to interact with me. I am attempting to train
him, he can sit and lay down. Other tricks are very hard to train because he
gets so excited that he does not pay attention. The sitting and lay down
part was fairly easy but I want to move on to other things. For instance he
will not obey me when I need him to come. He darts out the door into the
yard and will not come back when I call. If he does not want to go to bed he
will not come at bed time. He also like to jump up on me and I want to stop
this. Can someone give me some training hints? He is so eager to learn that
he will come to me and sit and bark for more attention or he will sit and
stare at me. I guess I really need to know how to control his excitement and
get him to calm down enough to pay attention. I think he could learn a great
many tricks, he is certainly eager!

Get a long leash with the training collar that has a loop that goes over his
muzzle. (I forget what it's called) Now when you call him, just pull on the
leash and it will pull him by the muzzle with no discomfort at all. He will
get the idea very quickly what you want him to do.

How much exercize are you providing him in addition to his training? If

you're not giving him a good brisk walk or jog a couple of times a day, then
he really *is* too full of energy to properly pay attention to training.
Puppies especially are easily distracted, and high energy ones like RT's
need a bit of tiring out sometimes in order to be able to focus.

If you don't think he will come when you call, avoid calling him - it will
only reinforce the behaviour. Have treats handy, and call him to you when
you think he is likely to come. When he starts coming even when you call him
to go inside - sometimes let him run out again so that he doesn't think that
everytime you call he has to leave the lovely yard with all it's smells.
Jumping can be annoying, what he wants is attention - don't give it. Turn
your back to him and say no, If the no only encourages him (you noticed
him!), then completely ignore him and turn your back. If you don't want to
teach him to bark when he wants something, don't encourage it by giving him
attention. Wait a few minutes and then play with him or train him.

If he likes to bark, teaching him to bark on cue shouldn't be very hard.
Crawling might also be a pretty simple trick to teach him, with bigger dogs
I have used chairs for them to crawl under to get to a treat. With a smaller
dog maybe just a hand will be enough? If not, I am sure you can find some
obstacle of appropriate height. Ask the dog to lie down, then encourage him
to crawl under the obstacle to get the treat. At first ask for only a couple
of inches.
A trick that I've seen small dogs do but haven't tried myself - is teaching
the dog the name of your fingers. First hold your thumb up, and when the dog
touches it with his nose (most curious dogs will do that eventually), praise
and treat. Repeat and say "Thumb". Next you hold out both thumb and
indexfinger and _don't_ praise and give a treat when the dog touches the
wrong finger.

Do remember that he is still pretty much a baby, and that he can get bored
very fast. Sometimes taking a longer break of up to a week or two can also
help if some trick seems to be very hard for him to get.

Rosa
