Default how about yellow eye goop?

Anyone know anything about this? My GSD usually has thick yellow eye goop
in the morning. I clean it out and then it seems fine until the next day.
Don't know if it's a sign of infection (in people it normally is). He
doesn't scratch at it and it seems to look more awful than it might be.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

What did the vet say?

When we took him to the vet he had so many other things needing to be looked
at (scratching, smells, large bump over his eye, callouses on his elbows,
weight) and not to mention that with all the other problems I hadn't really
noticed this one. We were most concerned with the scratching and the smell
(which got diagnosed and treated). I was hoping not to have to bring him
back so soon as he seemed petrified (very unlike him) and when he got home
he just wasn't himself until the next day. It doesn't seem to be causing
him any distress so I figured I'd ask around here to see if anyone had dealt
with it so I could avoid putting him through that.
