Default nightmares/dreams

I'm typing this while my dog is at my feet deep, deep in sleep- barking and
growling and his paws are flailing as if he's running. First- are you
supposed to not wake them when this happening for fear of bite or something
like a sleepwalking person? Does anyone know if this is a just dreaming or
nightmares we can hear him in a very dense big house in the other room.
Sometimes his eyes are open but he's clearly sleeping (snoring) it's pretty
creepy when he does that btw.
He does this pretty frequently, I've never waken him on purpose, but am
wondering if I should- if it's good like he's chasing a meatwagon or is
something trying to eat him!
Thanks again- learning lots here.
