Update:Behavioral or Physical?
Just for you, Jack. Ran into Angel and her owner at the dog park yesterday. She was tearing around as usual, and he said that her panic attacks had become substantially worse, but over the last couple of days, appears to be getting better. It seems that Adam burned some food in the oven once, and since then, anyone approaching the oven or microwave would induce panic attacks. So would people outside the door, stomping feet, knocks on the door, etc. She would go out on their walks gladly, but as soon as she realized they were headed home, would stop and refuse to move. She was extremely nervous at home, pretty much waiting for the ceiling to drop on her. They took her to the vet, who gave her a clean bill of health. Gave them some instructions on desensitizing her to noises, and told them that a smart dog with confidence issues (which she probably is) could benefit from something like Agility. So, they're looking into agility classes in the area (YAY!). Over the last couple of days, they just didn't use the oven or the microwave, and she was a whole lot better. How many people guessed there was a 'But' attached to this one? Yesterday evening, I got to see first hand what he meant by the panic attack - Uncontrollable shivering, tucked tail, ears laid waay back, and eyes as big as saucers. The dog park is surrounded by two fields, one of which is shielded from view by a bunch of bushes. There were people on the other side of the bushes, flying kites. Predictably enough, the dogs who like chasing things that fly (Pan, Sundance [Sheltie] and Precious [Pitbull]) were running along the fence, barking at the eeevil flying thing. Angle also joined in. Then, the kite went down quickly, making this wooshing noise. That did it. She kept trying to climb up her dad, and barring that, anyone who had a free lap. Although everyone's first instinct was to comfort her (and her dad had a really hard time putting her down), we all steadfastly ignored her. He walked off to the other end of the park, and she followed him, looking over her shoulder the whole time. After walking around a little bit, she started sniffing around a bit, and said hello briefly to a bunch of kids hanging around outside the fence, all of which was actively encouraged. Since Khan really likes her, we prompted her to play with him, and while her heart wasn't really in it, she jumped up to Khan, eliciting the usual 'Go away, kid' grumblies from him, which prompted her to try even harder. We eventually worked our way back to the end near the kites, and while she was a little bit nervous, we were always able to redirect her and get her to play with Khan. When they left, she was happily trotting off with dad, and walked past the people flying the kite without any problems. IMO, her parents were coddling her too much, although they didn't realize it at the time. I think they have a better idea of how to deal with this now. We are all still perplexed by the sudden onset and severity, but she'll probably be fine in the long run. Suja |
