Default how do you get cooperation for nail clipping?

My 11 wk old mini schnauzer hates to have her toenails clipped. She doesn't
mind me handling her feet, but as soon as she sees the clippers, she squirms
so much and I can't do the job. She even growled and snapped once. I don't
want to make it a traumatic experience we have to go through every week or
so. She also needs to cooperate for the groomer. Any advice?

I go through 1 hour sometimes 2 just cutting my dog's nails. I babytalk
her, give her a lots of treats when I was able to cut one. And yes she
growls, snaps at me. It takes time. Before she wouldn't let me cut or
shave her hair either. After 3 years she lets me. She would just sit
down and quietly let me cut her hair. I even clean her ears myself.
As long as she knows its a happy/fun/harmless experience, then your
dog won't be traumatized. Actually, with my dog, I'm the one who got
traumatized at first, but I got over it.

after trying every suggestion i could find with my male pit bull mix, i
finally gave in and took him to the vet to have them clipped. it's $12,
takes about five minutes, and i don't have to be in the same room with him.

it works out very well for us both.

Good Heavens, at that speed it'd take me 5-10 *hours* just to clip
toenails. There goes the weekend!

I babytalk
her, give her a lots of treats when I was able to cut one. And yes she
growls, snaps at me.

Everybody but Jack gets a single "end of toenail cutting" treat. Jack
gets more because he's a big weenie baby, but even he only gets about
one per foot. Take maybe 30 minutes to do all 5 critters, plus run a
comb through their (short) hair, check ears, teeth, pads, and do Sam's
stretches.

You're right, though, in that it takes time and repetition for the dog
to accept that "toenail time" is an inevitable and unavoidable weekly
chore.
