Default Fidget, again

First, thank you for all of the support you've all shown. It helps. I
haven't posted more because there hasn't been more to post, until now.

Last night Fidget stopped eating entirely...no treats, nada. Same thing
this morning. So David took him over to the vet, where he burst out
with bloody diarrhea in the waiting room. (Tarry, dried, blood, I
mean.) He spent the day over there and they did some bloodwork, and
would have stayed the night but that vet's office doesn't have any
technicians there at night and we didn't want to leave him under those
circumstances.

Best guess is he's got a bleeding ulcer. They've put him on Flagyl (the
vet wanted him to be on IV Flagyl, but that wasn't going to happen
today) and we have to try to get him off the steroids--but that has its
own downsides, which is why he's still on them.

He has an appointment with the internist at the other vet (the 24-hour
one) tomorrow, although we might take him up tonight if he has more
diarrhea (found a small clump, plus some vomit, in David's room just a
little while ago) or if we think he needs to go for other reasons.

The vet also sent home some prescription food, so a little while ago we
cautiously tried feeding him a little bit of it, by hand. He was quite
eager to take that and even licked the bowl I had set it in when he was
done, which is encouraging...now to see if it stays down. He's down to
15 lbs, from 20.

And yet, except for last night and this morning, he doesn't *act*
sick... he's still as frisky as ever at bedtime and waking-up time and
still makes a mad dash for home when I turn him loose after we get off
the elevator when coming back in, and right now he's sitting on the
floor next to me smiling.

In related news, my stepfather is in the hospital...he started coughing
up blood last night and my mother took him to the ER. They don't know
what the root cause of this is...he has so many things wrong with him at
the moment, starting with emphysema, and his Coumadin level was way out
of whack (blood is not always thicker than water!), so they're trying to
get him stabilized. I can't do anything in his case except worry (he's
in Florida) but my mother promises she'll keep me posted.

I'm beginning to hate April. Last year was Toby's diagnosis, this year
it's Fidget, David's sister, and my stepfather. Enough, already!
