Mateo & the Half-Child
There is a wonderful puppy in my intermediate class. Mateo is calm, focused,
and was ready for intermediate straight out of puppy class at age 5 months. He's a GSD mix of some sort. Yesterday we were doing a long-distance come exercise in the store aisles, and suddenly Mateo started barking and growling at something, and his mom couldn't get his focus back. This is very strange for Mateo, especially considering the target of his angst was a child. He's got 4 in his family, and is awesome with them. The kid was standing behind a palette piled with bags of dog food. All you could see was his upper body. Mateo was backing up from him as he was acting out. When the kid moved away from the food, Mateo acted confused, looking at him, looking at the food, looking back at him... but still backing away and barking. I wondered if he thought the kid had been split in half by the dog food. :} So I cheerfully started talking to him, while I walked all around and over the palette of food. Then I called him over so he could explore it. He sniffed all around the palette, concentrating on the area behind it where the kid had stood, and quieted down. Yup. I think that's what was going through his silly little puppy brain. He was back to his old calm self after he assured himself that there was no guillotine behind the palette. :} Canine Action Dog Trainer http://www.canineaction.com My Kids, My Students, My Life: http://hometown.aol.com/dfrntdrums/m...age/index.html |

I wondered if he thought the kid had been split in half by the dog food. I had a similar situation with Friday shortly after I adopted him. He started growling at a teenager from across the FezDome (horse arena - dingy lighting, about 80 feet away) and wouldn't let up. I walked Friday towards him but Friday would have none of that, so I had one of his best human friends go up and talk to the teen and then invite Friday over for a treat. That worked. I have no idea what happened - all I can think is that the teen looked like Friday's previous owner (who was a young blond male, like the stranger) or that Friday didn't like the bright green jacket which, in dog colour perception, may have made the teen look like he was cut in half and floating.
