Default Please advise!!!

Hi,

I found a little dog at the weekend. He has over grown nails/dew claws, his
teeth are brown and he has a cough. He was also afraid when I reached out to
pet him. He had an ID disk, so I called the number. A lady told me she no
longer owned the dog (for the past year). She gave me her sons number as he
had originally purchased the dog from rescue. He told me I could keep the
dog, and agreed to change the microchip details over to mine. Then he called
back and said his wife knew who the owners were and wanted him back.
I got the owners number and asked if I could keep him, but they said no. I
asked if I got him vetinary attention would they pay for it, so I could make
sure they fixed him up, they said no. They also admit that he is 3 and
un-vaccinated. They threatened me on the phone, so I called the police. They
said it was ok for me to get the dog treatment tomorrow, and I told them I
wanted to take the people to court (with evidence from my vet in the form of
a letter stating the dogs condition). I was told not to approach these
people.

Next the police call, saying the owners friend has reported that I held the
dog for ransom money!
The police say they are going to visit me within the next few days.

If the dog was in good condition and loved, I wouldn't hesitate to give the
dog back. We already love him to pieces. I am in the UK.

Where do I stand???

A.

That all depends on what the law is where you live.

If you don't have a lawyer friend to give you advice, you might want
to try calling your local RSPCA for suggestions.

Turning the dog over to an officially sanctioned rescue organization
will usually guarantee that his *immediate* veterinary needs are met
before he's released to anyone.

At this point, you have no idea whether he's is loved or not by his
owners; he may have escaped, etc.

Try to find a way to have his immediate veterinary needs met
(especially if you're willing to foot the bill), but you'd probably be
wise let the authorities deal with the issue of the dog's ownership.

Thanks for offering to give this dog a hand!
