Default Inhale ...... exhale

Paul Owens, in his book and a recent APDT article, makes a good deal
about breathing:
" ...inform owners how their dogs
interpret breath, or the lack thereof, in
tense situations, and how they can
improve or worsen an already tense
situation."

Are you aware of your dogs' breathing ... or your own? I'm not sharp
enough to include a dog's breathing in interpreting body language (or
maybe I don't see well enough). Also, my dogs have long hair.
Anybody with short-haired dogs notice the significance of their
breathing? Or yours?
