nursing mother leaves frequently
Hi,
My St. Bernard just had her first litter of 11, 5 days ago, the whelping went fine and all dogs were checked out by the vet the following day without any problems. My concern is with nursing, the matron frequently leaves the box, even with pupps still suckling, and lays down beside it. Is this an indication that I may have problems, she does clean them and help them relieve themselves. None of them is really loosing weight, but they are not gaining as much as I would want...they are at about 110-130% of birthweight. I have tried bottle feeding the few that are "stagnant" but only one of them accepts the bottle. So is this normal behavior, or should I "force" her to nurse the pupps and watch over her while she does. Are there any "magic" (commersial) nipples out there that no pup can refuse, or should I supplement them by tube feeding. Thanks, Fredric |
