Default People Who Shouldn't Have Dogs

i just got an e-mail from a someone i used to work with. she
asked me how elliott was doing (he was a wee baby puppy when
she and i worked together). at the time, she had a Pointer x
Dal who, not surprisingly, was super high octane. the dog was
completely ignored, unexercised, and unhousebroken. she
eventually got rid of the dog because it was too much of a
pain in the ass. nice, eh?

so, she's married now and has a ~2yo son. they're thinking of
getting a dog. i, cringing, asked "what kind?" any kind her
son wants, was the answer. i think my brane explodiated at
that point. i told her that she should carefully research
what kind of dog to get, because it's important to make sure
the dog will fit into their lifestyle. knowing her, i
cautioned her to stay away from Labs, GRs, Boxers, etc.
because they're high octane. i explained that they need
training and daily exercise or she'll create behavioral
problems. her response was "we have a big fenced yard, and
the dog will stay outside all day." i told her why A) that
isn't a substitute for exercise and B) why it could be
dangerous for the dog. she said *maybe* she'd reconsider
walking the dog.

i give up.
