Default The allure of wrecks

[]
It's the only reason that I can come up with for why luge
has been shown on the motor sports cable channel. It's also
the fun (sometimes, anyway) part of mushing sports. I came
across this post on the Down East Sleddog Club message board
today:

Saturday I attempted my first try at bikejoring and had
no idea that going for a 2 mile jaunt in the woods
would trash the bike I had. The handle bar is bent, the
chain fell off and rendered the back tire useless and
the bike is just in plain rough shape now. I had no
idea that I'd be going that fast with one dog and a
bike! Anyway, I was wondering what type of bike I
should get if I want to bikejor on fairly rough trails?
Since the chain fell off the bike I used, I wasn't sure
if there was anything in particular I should be aware
of when buying a new bike...

Although it's still not as good as the first-time skijorer
who didn't know what he was doing and instead of getting a
belt tied a rope around his waste. When he leaned forward
the rope was pulled up under his armpits and he was pulled
face-first down the for some distance by his dog, who saw
the trail in front of him and understood exactly what his
job was.

Well, his waist wasn't really wasted then, was it, Melinda? Though
he may have been.
Never even _heard of bikejoring, and I know a couple of people who
would be interested. I'll do a little search, but do you know of an
article or such which would whet their appetites?

Probably the canonical place to start is at Skijor Now:
http://www.skijornow.com/bikejor.html . I only know of one
race in the US, and it's pretty casual, at the New England
Sleddog Expo every year. They also have a casual canicross
race. Canicross is huge in Europe but nearly unheard of
in North America.

I don't usually comment on typos, but.... that one gives a rather
unfortunate mental picture. :-D
