Meaning of Stretching?
When I show my Pom the leash from across the room, he knows it is good news,
and walks/runs toward me, to get hooked up for his walk. Nearly always, he pauses to stretch - butt in air and front legs fully extended - and yawn, with full eye contact, just before he gets to me, then continues to approach me. In context, it looks either submissive, or a greeting of some sort. Regardless of whether he has been lying down or just walking around just before he comes, he does this. Any ideas what it means? |

I've always guessed that stretching means that dogs like to stretch
before going on a nice walk. It must feel good to their muscles. --Lia Roger wrote: When I show my Pom the leash from across the room, he knows it is good news and walks/runs toward me to get hooked up for his walk. You're lucky, my weim likes to stretch up along the wall by our front door, shredding the wall paper - its cute though. When we redecorate, we'll put something there specifically for her, to protect the wall. A sanding block might not be a bad idea - filing her nails whiles she's enjoying her stretch. Diana |

My beagle doesn't do this when going for a walk (too busy bouncing off the walls, I guess), but 99% of the time when he wants to be let out, he does the same thing at the backdoor -- stretch, butt up in the air -- it happens morning, noon, night, so it's not just when he's been resting and needs to wake up a bit. We refer to it as "praying to the God of Poop." |
