Default Meaning of Stretching?

When I show my Pom the leash from across the room, he knows it is good news,
and walks/runs toward me, to get hooked up for his walk. Nearly always, he
pauses to stretch - butt in air and front legs fully extended - and yawn,
with full eye contact, just before he gets to me, then continues to approach
me. In context, it looks either submissive, or a greeting of some sort.
Regardless of whether he has been lying down or just walking around just
before he comes, he does this. Any ideas what it means?

I've always guessed that stretching means that dogs like to stretch
before going on a nice walk. It must feel good to their muscles.

You're lucky, my weim likes to stretch up along the wall by our front door,
shredding the wall paper - its cute though. When we redecorate, we'll put
something there specifically for her, to protect the wall. A sanding block
might not be a bad idea - filing her nails whiles she's enjoying her
stretch.

My beagle doesn't do this when going for a walk (too busy bouncing off
the walls, I guess), but 99% of the time when he wants to be let out,
he does the same thing at the backdoor -- stretch, butt up in the air
-- it happens morning, noon, night, so it's not just when he's been
resting and needs to wake up a bit.

We refer to it as "praying to the God of Poop."
