tranquilizers for car sickness
my dog (F lab, shepherd, spaniel, rotweiler, etc., mix: 1 year old)
always gets carsick and throws up. I tried a number of things (benedryl, dramamine, herbal things, etc.) with little success. A few people recommended valium so i tried that. It worked perfectly, although she needed quite a lot of it to get and stay calm. I've been giving her 10 mg about an hour before travel and another 10 mg 45 min. later. She stays awake and alert but doesn't get sick. But i'm not happy giving her all of this valium. i weigh over 200 pounds and 20 mg of valium knocks me out so it seems excessive. My vet presribed Acepromazine Maleate 10 mg Tablets, and i used it last night. (she travels 3 hours back and forth from our country house every weekend.) she was completely knocked out. She didn't get sick but the drug seems very harsh. She was disoriented when we got home, and this morning, 15 hours after taking the pill, she's still knocked out. I prefer the effect and side effect of the valium but the vet liked this better, although he readily admits to being very conservative about such things. What are your thoughts. Thanks. Best, Larry |
