For All the Ones We've Loved and Lost

It really so hard to know what to say,
when another breath is taken away.

When the sun has set and our shadow is gone,
then the moon rises and the ghosts are born.

We do not forget them when they depart
They will always be with us, they are part of our heart.

Our tears flow feely as we feel the pain,
and yet we honor them by loving again.

How wise that is. How difficult to learn.
At times, we walk with a macho, middle-aged fellow and his black Lab.
He treats her well, though I always thought, a little distantly. "Just
a 'manly' attitude, I thought."
It was a surprise when, one day, he trusted me enough to blurt out,
"I'll be as good to her as I can, but I'll never love her nor have
another dog. I owned her mother, and she owned my heart. When she
died, I wanted to go with her. I could never survive that again."
