Default please help -- the dog refuses to sleep

A vet said he is all right, only the pulse is a little too high. But
he hasn't slept for three nights in a row already, he is weak and gets
weaker because he refuses to sleep. He lays down, closes his eyes and
in two seconds he is bolting up and looking all scared. As if he is
AFRAID to fall asleep. The second vet gave him a shot that was
supposed to let him sleep for several hours but it lasted only about
30 minutes.
Please, help--if anyone knows something.

Did he get into any chocolate?

Both vets say they have no idea why he is like that.
I'll ask about the chocolate--why, can it cause nervous stress? (It's
not my dog, it's my friend's dog, and she doesn't have internet access
now)
