Default OLD DOG NEEDS URGENT HELP!! PLEASE!

Hi - I have never posted anything before but I am at my wit's end and
need some advice. When I got married last year we merged more than
just our two lives - I had a Shepard/Husky mix dog named Buddy who is
well behaved, and my husband had a cat and a shitzu named Begbie. We
also got a cat together since then and have recently had a baby which
brings me to the reason I am here. We moved into a house and we have a
huge yard, but Begbie, if left off leash, will wander, so we keep him
on a long tether and let him out no less than 3 and as many as 6 times
a day. No one walks him, I admit, time is too scarce, but he was never
walked before either. Problem is that this 7 year old shitzu was never
properly house trained - he was only trained to go on paper, and so he
poops all over the house. But now my 9 month old son is starting to
crawl and the risks of a stray dog poop, not to mention the
frustration and extra work it causes for me (I am a disabled new mom
and cleaning can be taxing, not to mention child care alone...) But I
can't seem to train Begbie to save my life, and my husband obviously
never could. He seems to go out of his way to poop right in the middle
of the baby's room and no amount of punishment (or reward when he does
go outside) seems to do any good. I won't hit him for obvious reasons
and frankly I am not sure he would understand if I did, but I don't
want to resort to violence, so what is left? I have grown very
attached to this little dog and even if I hadn't my husband adores
him, but if this keeps up I will have to put my son's well-being ahead
of the dog's and put him in a shelter and it would break my heart to
do so. This dog is sweet but not bright and I don't have a clue how to
break him of this kind of habit. Anyone who has ANY suggestions, I
would be so grateful for your help. Many thanks: Lisa, Begbie's
frustrated mom!
