Default HELP! I have an epileptic dog

Greetings,

My Brittany is diagnosed with epilepsy. Even though he is on
Phenobarbital (with the right dosage found after several blood tests),
he is still going through seizures once a month.

Is this normal? I would have expected the drug to eliminate completely
the seizures or have them every six months or so.

Is there any alternatives (not too expensive) to control better the
seizures?

The major problem with the seizures is that he looses control of his
bladder and bowels so you can imagine the mess...

Any help is greatly appreciated.

How old is he? Was there a diagnosed cause for the seizures?
What kind of seizures is he having? How long do they last?
What's his name?

The goal is to eliminate seizures entirely. In practice,
however, this is difficult. You're taking the right path,
though - the most important thing is to reduce the frequency and
severity of the seizures. In most situations, drugs are the way
to go. Later, when your dog is under control, there are ways of
reducing the dosage.

Actually, epilepsy is a fairly inexpensive malady drug-wise.
Prices vary widely for PB (Phenobarbital) and Potassium Bromide
(KBr), so shop around. Once you get into the more esoteric
drugs, all bets are off.

Blood tests can add up, though you only need these twice a year,
maybe less if your dog has stabilised.

Yes.

On my web page (http://rocky-dog.com), there are some health
links on the links page. Check them out.

It's scary now, but you'll deal with it. Feel free to email me
privately.
