Dog suddenly scared of me
Hi,
I am visiting a relative and her neighbour has a young Golden Labrador. This dog used to jump up at me and try to lick my face off (which, I may add, I am not too keen on ). A few days ago, I came into the garden, convinced to be friendly with her and I may have moved a bit too suddenly or something as she bolted and all of a sudden, she is really scared of me. She wont freely come up to me, but she will hang her head down at me when she sees me looking at her, and she gets down on her haunches. We have tried feeding her with her favourite biccies, which she gladly accepts but still hangs down to me.. think of a slave recieving a gift from an emperor and bowing all the time.. sounds stupid I know but its linda like that. I saw similar behaviour when i was watching a pack of 'wild' wolves last year, but that was males being submissive to the higher ranking male. Any idea what 'pack' action could have taken place and what I can do to make her realise that I am not actually any higher ranking than she is and that she can just chill out? I am not a dog person by any means, but I would prefer a bouncy licky dog than one thats scared of me. Thanks, Tom... |

you're trying too hard to be friends Could very well be. If you're reaching for her, especially bending over her, walking directly towards her, staring her in the eyes, you're sending off signals that you may be a threat to her. Only she knows what might have set off this reaction, but right now she's fearful of you. So let her approach you at her pace, but do always have wonderful treats to offer her (just hold them casually out in the palm of your hand without looking at her, or toss them to the ground near her).
