Default hunters?

so Manu caught the gopher Lola was after yesterday. i should add that where
i live, what we call gophers (pocket gophers, actually) are small things,
about the size of a mouse. not the big guys you all have out east.

anyway, Manu seemed to think it was a great toy. he would pick it up, throw
it in the air, pounce on it, then prance around the yard with it in his
mouth.
i removed it from the yard today, and found it to be pretty much whole. he
didn't seem interested in eating it, just tossing it around.

is this normal? do your dogs eat their prey? or just play with them?

i wanted to be proud of him, i really did. but i keep thinking of Mo. and
it kind of ruined it.

hoping i haven't said anything to damage anyone's reputation.
