Default DOG with PAW problem

For some reason my dog (a mini Dachshund) started licking his rear right paw
yesterday morning. He seems to be doing it uncontrollably, and I noticed
that one of his "toes" has become a little raw right where the nail goes
into the toe.

Clearly, I need to contact my vet to get some advice, but he's out of the
office till tomorrow, and I just wanted to see if anyone here had any idea's
why he might be licking his paw so much.

Could there be some kind of infection of the nail? Or maybe a splinter or
something in there?

Thanks

Steve.
