Off Leash
Hi all, i was just wondering if you all have better luck training when y our
dog is off leash? At had a bad day at obediance, just didnt want to do anything. So i thought i would take him for a big run. I found this Great off leash park near a creek (will be great when it is summer, the ground is wet and there is a lot of water he can play in without actually getting into anything too deep) It was my frist time with him off leash, so i took him away from all the other dogs and had dad block the only place he could get away from me (it is all fenced off) he loved it. He came back a few times i call him (not very good with comes yet) and when i got him back i did a few lessons that i did at obediance. He went so well, i couldnt believe it was the same dog. I cant wait to go out again Cin -- ------------------------------------- http://members.ozemail.com.au/~c.collings/ We really never lose the ones we love... They live forever within our hearts. They say a man isn't dead unless he is forgotten, my brother will never be forgotten When a baby is born the angels weep and humans rejoice. When a loved one dies, humans weep, but the angels rejoice." |

I cant wait to go out again I am a firm believer that if you never allow your dog offleash, it could lend itself to having trouble offleash because your dog suddenly has freedoms it's never had before. Of course, a lot of people that never allow their dog offleash have good reason not too! One of my dogs only gets off-leash time around other dogs if I know the other dogs won't try to steal his toys. If I have a toy, I am the center of his universe. But, if another dog comes in & tries to take it, he's NOT going to be happy. The other dog is fine in offleash situations with most dogs, and is reliable on his recall (not "Perfect" yet, but "really good"! :-)) However, I am also leash dependent in some circumstances, like agility class. He behaves, and I should allow his more offleash time-- it's just that I have to focus on him, and when I do that, it's hard to learn from other's handling adventures, and hard to listen to the instructor. I will say, that for the most part, Bodhi's off-leash heelwork is much better than his on-leash. Probably because I, unknowingly at the time, pay more attention and am more tuned into him during this time! :-) Shelly & The Boys |
