Help w/ introducing and adult Cairn to a pup or dog?
Hello there. We have a nine year old neutered male Cairn Â* him being of a
working breed, he comes to work with me every day Â* in good health and possession of all his faculties. We also harbor a friendly-enough outdoor, neutered male cat roughly the size of a 1973 Cadillac Eldorado. We are looking to introduce another dog to the mix, either a puppy or a young adult, from a local Animal Shelter. My fear is that Jack the Dog will look upon a puppy as something very much like a squirrel, and therefore on the menu. I'm thinking a young dog might be more appropriate, but the family (a 14 year old girl, a 17 year old boy, and me and the wife) are angling for a puppy. With all of that, do any of you Cairn people have any experience with this sort of thing, any stories to tell, or any recommendations on breeds? Thanks very much in advance! Nah, he'll know it's a dog. :} Many older dogs have a tolerance for puppy behavior that they wouldn't take from an adult. Do you have a PetsMart near you? If so, they normally have adoptions on the week-ends. Take Jack and see how he acts towards the different types and ages of dogs. Has he been socialized with other dogs and puppies? That will make a big difference as to how he reacts. As for recommendations, your best bet is a female. Leah, I wonder if it would be a good idea to run this idea past the adopting agency first to see if they minded. (I don't know and this is an honest question) I know they may be used to shopper's dogs coming up to their dogs, but they might want to do it at another section of the store or be able to help Michael and offer advice. Has he been socialized with other dogs and puppies? That will make a big difference as to how he reacts. Another option is to go to a dog park. If the other attendees see that Jack is well-behaved, they might know of a time when there are mostly younger dogs around. (They might even have pups themselves) -- Marcel and Moogli |
