Dog running away
I got a dog at the end of July from the shelter and since then she
has run away 4 times. The first two weren't bad they were just on our block and she was back in the house in 5 or 10 minutes. The next was about a mile away to down by the river about a mile away. The last one yesterday was 2 or more miles. The last 2 times she did this fake out thing like she was going to stop and let me put the leash on but then takes off running. Is the dog just nuts or what? What can I do to stop this or at least stop her when she runs. My dad thinks a shock collar but I think she would be scared to death of it and she wold never come out from under the bed she hides under. Would a dog whistle stop her or some kind of treat. I also was thinking if I could find a electronic noise maker that sounds like a dog since she usually ends up trying to play with dogs as she runs. Any suggestions would be very helpful!! |

Do you not have a fence? That is required equipment for dog ownership. Until your fence is constructed, always take her out on a leash. In most communities, dogs allowed off leash are illegal and you could be fined and the dog picked up. |

You need bottom-line basic education on dog training, and you can do much more harm than good with a tool like that without it. Would a dog whistle stop her or some kind of treat. You're getting warmer. Coming to you should be more rewarding than running off. And yes, it is challenging to become more interesting to your dog than the squirrel she's chasing. :} I would highly recommend that you take her to a basic obedience class that uses reward training. Though I stopped recommending PetsMart when I discovered that there were plenty of other affordable alternatives out there, I think it might be a good option for you. They include "waiting at doors" in their curriculum, and not all classes do. It's fun, helps you build a great bond with your dog, keeps her active and stimulated, and you'll learn to communicate with her effectively. Instead of cowering under the bed, she'll be eager to do what you want! One more point I'll address: The last 2 times she did this fake out thing like she was going to stop and let me put the leash on but then takes off running. Is the dog just nuts or what? LOL! No, not at all. You were playing one of her favorite games. Whee, chase me! Think ya got me? Hah! Whee! Try running in the other direction instead. She just may chase you back into the house. Once. :} You need to learn how to train an effective "come," and the best way to do that is in a class.
